Blue-green algae is one of the healthiest foods on the planet! In fact, David Wolfe listed it in his Superfoods book. It’s loaded with nutrition, with about the highest protein, chlorophyll, and mineral content of any food. Perhaps even more exciting is the phenylethylamine (PEA), Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the blue pigment phycocyanin. These three substances are very beneficial and somewhat hard to get. DHA is primarily found in animal products, which is why I highly recommend blue-green algae to vegans and vegetarians, especially pregnant women and nursing moms. AFA blue-green algae contains 15% phycocyanin, which preloads the immune system by stimulating the production of stem cells from the bone marrow. Stem cells can become any other type of cell, including immune cells such as T-cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and macrophages.
Phycocyanin helps inhibit certain types of cancers, protects against free-radical damage, reduces chronic inflammation, heals the liver, streamlines the production of neurotransmitters, and improves the production of stem cells. Phenylethylamine (PEA) is an adrenal and brain chemical that is naturally made in the body from two amino acids: phenylalamine and tyrosine. PEA helps us focus while being alert so we can pay attention for longer periods of time. It’s known as the “love chemical.” You can only find a significant amount of PEA in two foods – cacao and blue-green algae. While cacao is also one of the top superfoods in the world, blue-green algae has about 50 times more PEA!
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. DHA is one of the best things for the brain and nervous system. Blue-green algae is an extraordinary source of DHA because it’s one of the only plant-based source of this very beneficial omega-3. Most food sources of DHA are animal-based. That’s why blue-green algae is one of the best things for vegetarians and vegans, especially pregnant and nursing mothers. DHA is really important for neurological development.
It’s important to distinguish the difference between short-chain omega-3 fatty acids and long-chain. You can get short-chain omega-3s by eating chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, and walnuts, but the body has to convert them into long-chain omega-3s. Some people do better at the conversion than others.
A Special Note For Pregnant & Nursing Moms:
Many vegetarians and vegans think they can get all the omega-3s they need from eating foods rich in short-chain omega-3s, which may or may not be the case. But unless you’re testing yourself to be sure, I think it’s a very wise decision to include a good source of long-chain omega-3s in the diet. And if you’re vegan or vegetarian, you don’t have many options. That’s why blue-green algae is so beneficial for those who choose not to eat animal products.
